The Best Use of Clay Pebbles

Updated: Jul 20, 2021

This is one question that we are asked time and again. And much as we want to answer right away, it's not that simple. These pH neutral, nutrient-free pebbles are multifunctional, they take on different roles depending on how they are used.

1. Ornamental Use

Very often, they are used for visual appeal. An inch thick surface layer of clay pebbles makes for a classy indoor or outdoor potted plant. But here's the thing... it is not all about the looks. Clay pebbles are porous in nature, so they absorb moisture and lock it in the soil for longer.

The perks - less frequent watering, fewer weeds and a happy, pretty, healthy plant!

2. Water Drainage

Clay pebbles do the job to perfection when it comes to keeping the roots of your potted plant well drained. Layer the bottom of your pot with an inch of these pebbles before adding soil to achieve a well aerated root zone.

Here's why is root aeration is important... most plants can die of root rot if roots are waterlogged!

3. Loamy Potting Soil

Mixing gently crushed clay pebbles to your potting soil while repotting is an ideal method to avoid compacted soil. Just about 10% of the total pot volume of clay pebbles in the mix is all it takes for soil hold moisture yet drain well.

The advantage... roots and a plant that grows well!

The next time you need to use clay pebbles, this might be of some help. These pebbles have proven really efficient in all 3 ways!
