Monsoon TLC for Your Green Babies

Updated: May 5, 2023

Even the first drops of rain seem to breathe new life into our plants. We are surrounded by new leaves, new shoots and every single imaginable hue of green.

No doubt, monsoon is the best time for plants to rejuvenate and grow. Not just in the forests, fields and gardens, but in our balconies too!

How can we make the best of this season for our home garden?

This is the time to take extra special care of your plants... Not only will the plant grow wonderfully now, you'll reap fascinating results a few months down the line, From soil management to pest protection, here's a lowdown on the monsoon regimen.

  • Prune: New shoots are eager to grow, so long as we provide them with the space for that. Prune your plants.

  • Repot: Low temperatures and high humidity, this combination is unbeatable for growth of the roots. It is also the reason plants can quickly recover from the shock of repotting.

  • Drainage: Ensure that the soil is aerated and allows the excess water to flow out. Stagnant water damages the roots. Clay pebbles do a good job here!

  • Water: Same as bad drainage, overwatering too, damages the roots. Check the soil and water only if required.

  • Fertilize: Give plants the nourishment to grow to the best version of themselves. Vermicompost is dual purpose - it aerates the soil in addition to fertilizing! Vermiwash is an excellent liquid fertilizer and foliar spray - great for growth, flowering and fruiting!

  • Prevention: Spray your plants with a mild pesticide every week to keep diseases and damage at bay. Jeevamrut works as a mild pest repellent and also as a growth booster.

  • Weeding: Weeds gobble up the nutrients meant for your plants. You don't want to witness the speed with which an odd weed in your pot can grow! Pull them off from their roots.

  • Protect: Excessive rain can be quite challenging for the potted plants, Covering them with a perforated will help.

The right time of day during monsoon...

~ Unlike summers, avoid watering in the evenings. Plants feel better if the soil is not-so-wet-n-cold at night.

~ Fertilize earlier in the morning than later. This is when the roots are more receptive to trigger absorption.

~ Apply pesticides early in the morning when it is cool. This also gives time for it to dry before the sun shines (if it does).

~ Foliar spray should be applied before 10am or after 5pm. The small pores on the bottom of the leaf - the stomata are open and absorption is best then.
