A Wheatgrass Shot A Day Keeps The Doctor Away!

Updated: Jul 20, 2021

The importance of a strong immune system has been impressed upon us now more than ever before. Courtesy coronavirus!

Here's one power-packed shot that's so so doable. Wheatgrass juice. You've most likely had it before or at least heard of someone who does. If you dusted it off, thinking of it as yet another modern day fad, think again. I'm told, back in the day, my mom's grandpa, a vaidya, would give out a clump of young wheatgrass harvest each, for his grandchildren to chew on, every morn. Chew on that 😄

A shot of wheatgrass is filled to the brim with antioxidant enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. All of that and chlorophyll that doesn't just give the juice its deep colour, but has anti-inflamatory superpowers too.

Where do you get this? I would say, grow it! It can be grown on soil or without soil. We like to grow ours hydroponically, i.e. no soil, only water. Here's why... Up to the stage of growth we require for juicing, the plant utilizes only nutrition from its seed, it does not draw external nutrients. It can do perfectly well without soil.

Chances are, you have everything you need to begin, right at home. Let's check...

Ingredients:

  • A fistful of wheat seeds

  • A grow tray / food container (in which water drain holes can be made)

  • Clean cotton cloth

Growing Method:

  1. Wash and soak the seeds in water for 8 to 12 hours.

  2. Drain. Spread out the soaked seeds on the tray evenly. This is Day 1.

  3. Wet the cloth and spread over the seeds.

  4. Keep the tray in a warm and dark place.

  5. Ensure that the seeds never dry up. Spray water as frequently as required to keep the cloth moist.

  6.  By Day 2, the seeds will have sprouted. Continue to keep it in the same warm, dark place, covered and moist.

  7. By Day 4, you will see that your wheatgrass has grown about 2cms tall. Take off the cloth.

  8. Move the tray to a place that has plenty of indirect sunlight. It is too delicate to take harsh, direct sunlight.

  9. Water at regular intervals so that the seeds are never dry.

  10. Between day 7 & 10, the wheatgrass should have grown about 12 to 15 cms tall. You can harvest it at this stage.

  11. Harvest the wheatgrass first thing in the morning. Cut about 1 cm above the roots with a pair of kitchen scissors or knife.

  12. Juice immediately. If you'd rather chew on it like my great grandpa proposed, go ahead and do so - it gives you the same benefits. Remember to spit out the fibre eventually

Juicing Method:

  1. Put the harvested wheatgrass into a regular blender (or a masticating juicer if you have one)

  2. Add 5-6 tablespoons of water

  3. Blend for a minute.

  4. Strain an ounce into a shot glass. Avoid drinking more than that in a day.

  5. Now, what are you waiting for? Drink it up fresh. Never store it.

All set to make your own wheatgrass? It's never too late to start, right? Cheers to that! Give us a call or whatsapp us on 99230 64949 to know more or if you would like to buy the wheatgrass we grow.
